Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy
Important Note: Before pursuing horseback riding, please check with your pediatrician. Ten to thirty percent of people with Down syndrome have antlantoaxial instability, an instability of the upper vertebrae which increases the risk for spinal cord injury. Your doctor can perform the X-rays needed to ensure that your child is safe to participate in horseback riding, tumbling, and other physical activities. For more information, see http://www.ndss.org/Resources/Health-Care/Associated-Conditions/Atlantoaxial-Instability-Down-Syndrome/.
Hippotherapy is occupational, physical, or speech-language therapy supported by the movement of a horse, while therapeutic riding is horseback riding instruction adjusted for people with disabilities. The following website provides a helpful chart detailing additional differences between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding: http://www.childrenstheraplay.org/hippotherapy-vs-therapeutic-riding.
